5 Best Mascots in the MLB

Sports aren’t all about the athletes. From coaches to general managers, scouts, athletic trainers and even mascots – there are lots of people involved in the process of making a great sporting experience. In this article – we honor mascots, as we look at the top 5 in the MLB.

1) The Phillie Phanatic – Philadelphia Phillies

When it comes to mascots – the Phillie Phanatic is a legend. Named the number 1 mascot in all of sports by both Bleacher Report and NBC Sports, the Phanatic is also known as the most sued mascot in sports. The Phanatic is 1 of only 2 MLB mascots inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame. Plus, the Phanatic’s Instagram is almost as entertaining as it’s in-game antics and abilities to get under opposing players’ and coaches’ skin.

2) Baxter the Bobcat – Arizona Diamondbacks

Known for his crazy shenanigans and interactions with fans, Baxter the Bobcat calls Arizona’s Chase Field home. In addition to all the Diamondbacks home games, Baxter makes over 400 appearances a year – at schools, hospitals and events in the community. No wonder Baxter has made so many friends.

3) The Presidents – Washington Nationals

What’s better than 1 mascot? 6. While Screech (the eagle) is the main mascot of the Nats, The Presidents provide the in-game entertainment. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt (the presidents on Mount Rushmore), William Howard Taft and a yearly rotating president make up The Presidents. The numbers on their jerseys represent the order they held the office. The President races at Nationals Park are something to witness!

4) Rally Squirrel – St. Louis Cardinals

Although Rally Squirrel is the Cardinals’ secondary mascot (Fredbird fittingly being their primary mascot), the story behind this one makes it worthy of a mention on our list. The fable behind Rally Squirrel dates back to the 5th inning of Game 4 of the 2011 NLDS. The Cardinals were considered heavy underdogs, facing the league best Philadelphia Phillies. While the Cardinals’ Skip Schumaker was taking a swing at bat, a squirrel scampered across home plate and through play. The Cardinals went on to win that game 5-3 and ultimately stunned the Phillies by taking the decisive Game 5. The story ends with the Cardinals (who barely made the post-season that year) going on to eventually beat the Texas Rangers to win the World Series in epic fashion. The Cardinals honored the real-life Rally Squirrel by including a squirrel on their World Series ring. And that’s the story of how Rally Squirrel (the mascot) was born.

5) Mrs. Met

You probably thought we were going include the only other MLB mascot inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame, Mr. Met on this list. But, given the fact that Mr. Met has recently gotten himself in the middle of a pretty sticky situation, we opted to include his pal Mrs. Met. Being named the best mascot in baseball by superstar Noah Syndergaard and having a plethora of charity involvement also helps Mrs. Met’s case for being on this list!
